Scout Trustees: Supporting Scouting Behind the Scenes

Scout Trustees play a vital role in ensuring the smooth running and long-term success of Scouting. They are the volunteers who help manage the business side of Scouting - making sure that our group is safe, financially sound, and well-governed.

While our volunteer leaders focus on delivering amazing experiences for young people, our Trustees work behind the scenes to provide stability, support, and accountability.

What Do Scout Trustees Do?

Trustees sit on a Trustee Board and have three key responsibilities:

1. Governance: Ensuring the group meets its legal responsibilities and complies with The Scout Association’s policies.

2. Finance: Overseeing budgets, accounts, and funding to make sure we are sustainable and able to grow.

3. Support: Helping to manage facilities, equipment, insurance, and so our leaders can focus on delivering high-quality programmes.

Trustees also support strategic planning, help recruit new volunteers, and ensure that Scouting remains inclusive, accessible, and welcoming to all.

Who Can Be a Trustee?

Anyone aged 18 or over can become a Trustee. You don’t need to have experience in Scouting - in fact, fresh perspectives are always welcome. We’re especially keen to hear from people with skills in finance, property management, HR, fundraising, or governance - but passion and reliability matter most.

Trustees must be eligible to serve under charity law and will need to complete a DBS check and some basic training provided by The Scouts.

Why Become a Trustee?

Being a Scout Trustee is a meaningful way to support your local community. It’s a chance to:

* Use your skills for good

* Gain experience in governance and leadership

* Make a real difference to the lives of young people

* Join a team of supportive, like-minded volunteers

Best of all, it’s flexible. Trustee roles are often suited to people who want to help but can’t commit to weekly meetings or frontline delivery.

Join Us

We’re always looking for committed, thoughtful, and enthusiastic people to join our Trustee Board. If you're interested in helping to shape the future of Scouting in your local area, we’d love to hear from you.
